Causes of Low Testosterone in Men

There can be many causes of low testosterone. Some are more direct as a result of common injuries. Others not so obvious.

Here's a list of possible reasons your testosterone levels may be low.

Low Testosterone Causes

  • 1. Age

  • 2. Head injury

  • 3. Testicular injury

  • 4. Vasectomy

  • 5. Medication

Age and Low Male Testosterone

The older you get, the more susceptible you are to developing low testosterone. Organs eventually fail and wither, and your inner workings aren't as efficient as they once were.

75-84 450 ng/dl
85-99 400 ng/dl

Head Injury and Testosterone

If you've sustained a blow to the head or a traumatic brain injury, caused by a stroke, heart attack, or loss of oxygen for long periods of time, low testosterone may result.

An important part of the testosterone puzzle, called the HPTA (hypothalamic pituitary gonadal axis) may get damaged during such a injury.

The hypothalamus and pituitary gland are brain structures that act like traffic controllers to signal your testicles to make more testosterone. With those signals gone, there's a good chance you may develop low testosterone levels.

Testosterone and Testicular Injury

Getting a traumatic injury to your testicles can also result in a cause of low testosterone. As part of the HPTA, your gonads (testicles) when damaged, will diminish or stop producing testosterone. So take care of those family jewels. Although you get a pair... two are better than one.

Vasectomies may Lower Testosterone

What your doctor may not have told you... a little known side effect of getting a vasectomy is developing an autoimmune (self-attacking) disorder, that literally kills your testicular tissue.

Since your sperm are no longer needed, your body attacks them like a foreign invader. Due to the closeness of your testicles to your sperm, they can suffer damage in the process.

Although this happens in a minority of people, it's definitely important to keep a close eye on if any symptoms of low testosterone were to occur.

Causing Low Testosterone Through Injury

Medication may be the cause of low testosterone through three different paths. They can;

  • 1. Damage nerves

  • 2. Damage the vascular system

  • 3. Damage the endocrine system

Testosterone Lowering Medications/Drugs

  • 1. Anti-hypertensives (Inderal, Clonidine, Reserpine, Lasix, etc...)

  • 2. Antidepressants (SSRI's, tricyclics, MAOi's, etc...)

  • 3. Tranquilizers (Haldol, Thorazine, Zyprexa, Seroquel, etc...)

  • 4. Anticholinergics (Benadryl, Donnatal, Pro-Banthine, Cogentin, etc...)

If you've experienced any of these low testosterone causes, I'd suggest getting yourself checked by your doctor. Testosterone replacement may be needed if appropriate.

Normal ranges for free testosterone (the actual active testosterone that your body can use) are: 8.7 - 25 picograms per milliliters (pg/ml).

Testosterone “Normal Range”

Until recently, the “normal range” of testosterone levels in men was determined to be between 250ng/dl and 1100ng/dl. This wide range depicts the ideal testosterone levels for men at any age, yet many men at the lower end of that spectrum do not feel well at all. Our highly trained physicians have determined the optimal range to fall between 700ng/dl and 1100ng/dl; what many men experience in their late 20’s and early 30’s. Every man is different; what is optimal level for you may not be another man’s optimal level.

Assessing Normal Testosterone Levels

Determining the normal testosterone levels for your age, and reaching an optimal zone, can greatly increase your odds of successful treatment.

When testosterone levels are maximized; it enables the energy, strength, and motivation needed to live your life to the fullest.

But if they aren't managed properly, or your low testosterone symptoms remain after treatment, it can lead to an alternatively frustrating experience (as I'm sure many of you can attest to).

Although the research on appropriate testosterone levels has generally been scant up until this point, I was able to find a couple good studys indicating average ranges in the male population at large.

Male Androgen Levels in an Unhealthy Population

Depending on the lab your doctor uses, male testosterone levels typically range between 250ng/dl and 850 ng/dl.

As you may well imagine, these ranges are not set to optimal levels. They are a cross section of men aged 20 to 100; many sick and diseased, from a lifetime of unhealthy habits.

So when your blood work arrives and your doctor refuses treatment due to your "normal" testosterone levels, when it's actually somewhere closer to the bottom of the range, then a gentle reminder of optimal health may be in order.

If you kindly point out you have the T levels of a sick 90 year old, maybe he/she will come around.

Emphasize Low Testosterone Symptoms

If your doctor is stubborn, or doesn't like their patients being active participants in their own healthcare... you may be better off emphasizing your symptoms that are more specific to low testosterone.

Noting a loss of sex drive, development of impotence, or reduced muscle mass and strength should give any knowledgeable doctor a red flag that T levels aren't on par.

Depression, fatigue, and loss of motivation are also commonly caused by low testosterone. Unfortunately many doctors would rather prescribe an antidepressant than bring back to normal a natural substance your body already makes.

Doctor being Stubborn? Up the Ante to Ensure Treatment

If all else fails, play the desperation card. Maybe tell him your you're at the cusp of getting fired due to poor work performance.

Or alternatively, your wife/girlfriend has shown concern over your sex drive/impotence problems or recent lack of ambition.

Most doctors with a soul will come around once you explain the seriousness of your case. And if they don't? Shop around.
